Restaurant Jobs

Many are able to find work in restaurants, either part-time or full-time during the summers. There are a number of different positions you can fill. You can be a host or hostess, which means that you will great people at the door and show them where to sit based on a seating chart that your manager will show you how to use. You can also be a busser, which means that you will clear dishes after people are done eating, clean the tables, and reset them with silverware, napkins, and fresh linens. Some restaurant jobs happen behind the scenes back in the kitchen. You can be hired to work as a dishwasher – scrubbing down dirty plates so that they can be reused on busy nights, or left to dry for the next day. Or you can be hired as a prep cook. This job will have you lending a hand to the main chefs, chopping vegetables, mixing sauces, and setting pots of water to boil. But before you become a prep cook, the chef will likely want to see if you are interested in a career in the culinary arts, so that he or she will know whether or not it is worthwhile to train you in these skills.
